Robin Stewart

Drawing has been a part of Robin Stewart’s art from the beginning. He begins his work with pencil drawings and grids: graduating to oil painting. ‘Bach at the Base of the Stair’ is a reflection of a former life practising clarinet. He takes these ideas into a figurative expression using geometry. Robin re-imagines the human figure.
His influences in fine art have been inspired by the abstract painters of the early twentieth century, the European Moderns, Kandinski, Rochenko, and the British and American modern and contemporary painters. Robin’s work is figurative modern, looking to the Russian abstract movement which used pure abstraction. He takes these ideas into a figurative expression using geometry. Robin’s new work turns towards stories with people and couples and life events. His pathways remain in his inspiration of the abstract and the European Moderns.
Using geometry once more and expanding his palette and tapping into collage in this new work, he creates the circumstances of contemporary life. ‘Night on the Crossing’ brings all his geometry into a fully realised figure. Collage establishes new texures. All the effort is to create a real, new space. It is late evening, the street is empty and the man is heading home.
The echos are here: cubism, construction, abstraction and contemporary, modern painting. And once again, geometry and the figure. Robin Stewart shows with the kind permission of Australia Galleries.
